Senior Superintendent of Police, Rajouri, Farooq Khan told UNI that army personnel of 43 Rashtriya Rifles along with state police, acting on a tip-off, cordoned off Raina Mohalla of Thanamandi for search operations.
Police said that acting on a tip-off, a joint operation was launched by troops belonging to the 22 Rashtriya Rifles and the CRPF, and the state police in Sopore town on Sunday morning. Having surrounded the house in which the terrorists were holed, the security forces challenged them to surrender. But the cornered terrorists resorted to opening fire on the troops. Till reports last came in, a Central Reserve Police Force trooper and a policeman were reported to be injured.
"As the troops moved in, they came under heavy fire from the militants hiding in a house. Reinforcements were immediately rushed to the area and the house was surrounded," a senior police officer said in Srinagar.
Colonel G S Sarna was killed in the encounter.
The terrorist, identified as Ali Baba, was shot dead in Baramulla.
Self-styled divisional commander Bilal Habshi, was wanted in over 100 cases of killings, including those of policemen.
The police identified the Hizbul commander as Suhail Afzal, the divisional commander of the Hizbul Mujajhideen, who topped the list of most wanted militants
